City History
Delray Beach was settled as an agricultural community in 1895. First incorporated in 1911, it became the City of Delray Beach on May 11, 1927. The City has experienced substantial growth from 1,015 people in 1920 to 64,000 people today. When George Gleason first purchased land in the area in 1868, he found a mix of Seminole Indians and former black slaves who escaped from their owners already living in the area. More
