Miramar High student accused of taking gun to school

Teen admitted selling drugs, officials say

Authorities say a teen selling marijuana at Miramar High School also snuck a gun and ammunition into the building on Thursday.

The incident was one of three reported cases of minors carrying guns to school last week, one of them ending with the death of a Fort Lauderdale student.

"We're obviously not happy," said Keith Bromery, a Broward County School District spokesman.

A Miramar High teacher alerted security to a 16-year-old student acting strangely in his classroom and holding his bookbag tightly, Bromery said. The student's name was not released.

A search of the student's bookbag turned up a Glock pistol, hollow point ammunition and bags of marijuana, according to a police report.

Officials say the student told police he was selling drugs and brought the gun so his parents wouldn't find it.

The student will be suspended for two weeks, and expulsion proceedings have started, Bromery said. He was charged with bringing a gun onto school property and possession of a controlled substance.

On Wednesday, police say a 15-year-old shot a friend to death at Dillard High in Fort Lauderdale.

Two days later, an unidentified third-grader at Walker Elementary in Fort Lauderdale took a gun to school.
