If you're still using plastic zip-seal bags in your kids' lunch boxes, stop. Made of non-biodegradable materials, these bags eventually break down into smaller, toxic particles, which can contaminate soil, pollute waterways and be accidentally ingested by animals.<br>

Amanda Baldwin, a mother of two in Wellington, goes a step further and avoids using anything disposable. <!-- She has her family carry snacks in reusable containers that she washes. These are not only friendlier to the environment, but they're also more cost effective, as they only need to be purchased once, she explains.

If you're looking to buy a re-usable lunch set, Laptop Lunch System (available at laptoplunches.com) is an eco-friendly choice. Made from FDA-approved, food-grade, recyclable plastic, it's housed in a laptop carrying case and comes in an array of vibrant, appealing colors. Before you purchase anything new, however, keep in mind that continuing to use your child's current lunch carrier is the greenest (and cheapest) choice.

Stock it with re-usable food storage containers, a cloth napkin, a re-usable water bottle and metal silverware (not disposable plastic). When choosing plastic storage containers, be sure that they are marked with the number two, four or five, as other plastics may not be safe for multiple uses, especially if washed at high-temperatures in the dishwasher. -->
