Dwyane Wade, born January 17, 1982, was drafted by the National Basketball Association's Miami Heat with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft after playing two seasons at Marquette University. He has since become one of the NBA's biggest stars. Wade was born to Dwyane Sr. and Jolinda Wade and was raised in the Chicago suburb of Robbins, Ill., by his father and stepmother. He failed to gain much notice from major Division I colleges until after his junior season at Richards High School and even then remained overshadowed by other Chicago-area players. Wade signed with Marquette but sat out his freshman season as an academic non-qualifier. Wade would lead the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Final Four in 2003. He improved his draft prospects in the 2003 NCAA Tournament with a strong performance in the Mideast Regional, posting a triple-double against top-ranked Kentucky with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Marquette retired his No. 3 jersey on Feb. 3, 2007. Wade made an immediate impact as a shooting guard with the Heat, using his elite athleticism and a relentless attacking style to average 16.2 points as a rookie during 2003-04. With Wade playing a key role, the Heat made a surprise run to the second round of the NBA playoffs, losing to Indiana. The Heat acquired star center Shaquille O'Neal before the 2004-05 season, and the two teamed up to lead the Heat to the Eastern Conference finals, which it lost in seven games to the Detroit Pistons. Wade was named to his first All-Star game during that season. In 2005-06 Wade was named a starter on the All-Star team and led the Heat to an NBA title. Wade earned Finals MVP honors after the Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks in six games of the best-of-seven series. Wade's popularity continued to grow during the next season, but Chicago swept the Heat in the first round of the playoffs, ending an injury-marred season for Wade. Wade sat out the start of the 2007-08 season due to recovery from surgeries to his left knee and shoulder following the previous season. Wade is currently married to Siohvaughn, with whom he has two sons, Zaire and Zion.
